Ombra – Bethnal Green

ombra5

I’m not too well equipped really to go into too much depth about Ombra as I didn’t actually have any food here, I just got a drink as they have a really great outdoor terrace. Inspired by a Venetian bacaro or bar (fittingly as it’s right next to the canal) Ombra aims to serve traditional Venetian dishes and has a good wine list. My cousin complains that although the food is great the portion sizes are too small. The reason I’m writing about it though is I think the place looks great, they have done a great job with the design of the interior. It has a mixed retro/modern look and although quite small, the big windows make it feel airy and cosy at the same time and I just love the Perspex coloured tabletops. Located on Vyner Street, East London’s version of West London’s Cork Street you’ll find a bunch of independent art galleries showing a range of usually rubbish artwork. It doesn’t really make a difference though how prestigious the gallery is, the work is all the same level of crap but the fancier art galleries can afford to paint their walls more often. When I heard that Sam Taylor Wood had been awarded an OBE I nearly scratched my eyes out. That’s a better accolade than some war veterans got. If you look up her work on the White Cube website this is what it says, “Sam Taylor-Wood makes photographs and films that examine, through highly charged scenarios, our shared social and psychological conditions” this was underneath a badly lit video of a bowl of fruit rotting and a biro, I’m so worked up now I’m going to get a cup of tea and a digestive biscuit.
