The Russet – Hackney

Once you start heading further away from Broadway Market the cafes become by no means less abundant just a little more spread out. You’ll find them scattered everywhere in the most random places, it’s like playing hide and seek. The Russet is part of Hackney Downs studios and right next to the Downs themselves. It’s an old print warehouse and they’ve kept it simple on the inside, very Berlin-esque with a bit of a haphazard approach to interior design but plentiful in character. They stick to local suppliers as best they can, a thing a lot of Hackney Cafes have going for them and something I applaud. The bread is from the e5 Bakehouse, another favourite of mine and Ale from the London Fields Brewery amongst others. They have some nice cakes and sandwiches with a few hot dishes cooked onsite in their small kitchen, with a daily changing menu. They host events and courses on various things to make it all a bit more interesting and cater to a typical up and coming Hackney crowd.
